It is refreshing to see that Monash University has also officially come on board as supporting one of Australian Breast Care Centre’s key mission pieces – Genetic Testing for cancer risk.
Our founder, Dr Nicole Yap’s message is that you don’t have to have a known family history of breast cancer, to have a genetic mutation which predisposes you to getting breast cancer which is often at an early age and aggressive, was well supported in this news bulletin.
It is important to be aware that if you do have a genetic mutation, then waiting for breast cancer to occur means that you will always have to live with the potential issues of recurrence, or spread to other parts of the body. Prophylactic surgery (ie removing the tissue that can turn into a cancer), will enable you to live cancer free.
For those involved with the Monash gene testing kit, with regards to breast cancer risk, it only tests for 2 (BRCA 1 and 2) as opposed to other gene mutation testing for breast cancer risk, such as the Bra Ovo, which currently tests for 12 genetic mutations.
